What is this way of practicing?

This approach to yoga was inspired by Vanda Scaravelli, who worked with B.K.S.Iyengar, Desicachar, and J.Krishnamurti. She went on to develop her own practice based on ‘awakening the spine’ using the elements of breath and gravity. Vanda keenly avoided this yoga becoming a style or technique. Her name has become increasingly popular, and it is important to remember it was a continuum of the work that inspired Vanda.

Diane Long and Sophy Hoare both worked closely with Vanda Scaravelli. Diane was her pupil for 23 years, and Sophy studied with Vanda regularly for 8 years. Sophy and Diane met through Vanda and continue to work and teach together to deepen their practice.

Since Vanda’s death in 1999 her legacy has continued through Diane and Sophy. What she gave carries on developing because it was not a set of instructions, but a feeling of curiosity for what the practice can show us. I am truly grateful to Sophy and Diane for passing on this curiosity to me.
